SUMMARY:When the sh*t hits the fan - helping you with business continuity planning
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this frank\, no-holds-barred\, non-recorded\, ICG-member only discussion.\nWe’ve probably all been there – or will be at some point. You experience a cyber attack\, you’re suddenly diagnosed with ill-health or an accident\, you go through a disaster like a flood\, or a break-in or a fire… \nThe list goes on. \nAs business-owners juggling it all\, all of this can be terrifying. So terrifying that it can feel insurmountable to plan for these things and know when to turn when they strike. \nNow is your chance to do something pro-active. Join us to hear about what fellow ICG members have gone through – and how they came out the other side – and find out more about how the ICG can help. \nThis should be an enlightening session – don’t miss out. It won’t be recorded so that we can all share our experiences freely. \nSpecial thanks to those ICG members who’ll be kicking the discussion off; \nKath Rhodes – Qual Street \n \nKath will be talking about how she fell foul of a phishing attack – with clients getting fake emails from her as a consequence… \n  \n  \nClaire Salkeld – Hummingbird Insights \n \nClaire will be be talking about how cyber attackers can try to gain access to bank accounts without you even realising\, and what you can do to protect yourself. \n  \n  \nDanny Sheahan\, Delve Research \n \nDanny  will talk about his experience of receiving a cancer diagnosis while running a small research business\, and what it taught him about preparedness\, client relationships\, and building business continuity. \n  \n  \nRegister your place here

SUMMARY:'Positive Intelligence' by Shirzad Chamine
DESCRIPTION:A members-only event\nThis month’s ICG Book Group will be lead by ICG member Jeff Deighton. \n‘Positive Intelligence’ by Shirzad Chamine \nOnline review: “Positive Intelligence (PQ) measures the percentage of time your mind is serving you as opposed to sabotaging you.  While your IQ and EQ (emotional intelligence) contribute to your maximum potential\, it is your PQ that determines how much of that potential you actually achieve. Shirzad Chamine reveals how to achieve one’s true potential for both professional success and personal fulfilment.” \nJeff says: “I found some of it very moving and resonant and just following some of the principles & actions at the start of my day instead of immediately jumping on the computer made me feel a happier person with a more balanced perspective I hope it helps a few others just find the odd practical technique for stopping the brain always processing\, evaluating and judging. It has lots of practical techniques in there about how to live and work and deal with negativity and conflict.” \n  \nRegister your place here (if you haven’t read the book\, you’re still welcome to join).\n

SUMMARY:Book Group: 'Motherdom: Breaking Free from Bad Science and Good Mother Myths'
DESCRIPTION:  \nPlease join us at our next Book Group session\, where we will discuss ‘Motherdom: Breaking Free from Bad Science and Good Mother Myths’ whilst also welcoming author\, Alex Bollen. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAlex’s book Motherdom: Breaking Free from Bad Science and Good Mother Myths was published in March in the UK and US by Verso. It explores how flimsy science has been used to shame and blame generations of mothers. It’s been described as “compelling” by the New Scientist and “a thorough investigation into the intense pressures mothers face”  by the Washington Post. \nAlex’s book owes a lot to her experiences as a researcher. Alex was a Research Director at Ipsos MORI and has been a freelance researcher since 2011. Ben Page\, who was CEO of Ipsos\, has said of Motherdom: “This is essential reading for anyone interested in how research should – and shouldn’t – be used.” \nMotherdom is available from all good bookshops\, including Waterstones and Foyles. The ebook can be purchased from Verso or Amazon. \n  \nJoin the session here: no need to pre-register

SUMMARY:Book Group: "The Way We Talk Around Here" by Gill Ereaut
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin author Gill Ereaut\, alongside ICG member Judy Taylor who’ll lead a discussion about this book that shows how your organisation’s culture shows up in your language and why it matters. \nJudy says… \nIf you work with companies who are aiming to improve workplace culture and communication\, or if you are responsible for advising clients on how they communicate with their staff\, about their brands\, to their consumers\, The Way We Talk Around Here is well worth a read. \nIt’s great for qualitative researchers to understand how and why language is the data of culture. By being able to decode language and its influence\, it helps highlight how it also sets invisible rules and parameters that affect how we are perceived and how we perceive others.  Reading this book can change how we speak\, read and listen. The book outlines clear strategies for leaders to adopt more relevant and meaningful cultural norms through the language they use. The book focuses on linguistics\, and provides insights into how small linguistic changes can transform a business or brand culture. It’s great to apply some of her wisdom to running focus groups and depth interviews too\, and especially apply it when completing ethnographic work. \nExtract from the Amazon summary: \nThe unspoken rules and unquestioned assumptions that make up an organization’s culture are so well hidden that\, once we become insiders\, we stop noticing them. They’re just ‘the way we do things around here’.  Examining an organization’s language is a powerful and practical way to shed light on its culture. \nGill Ereaut describes how to uncover organizational and team cultures through paying close attention to the language used and adopted by insiders. \n\nHow researchers and ethnographers – and those helping organisations – can spot language patterns to identify unconscious rules and norms\n\nNB Gill Ereaut is a linguistic consultant specializing in analyzing corporate cultures and their effects. She founded UK consultancy Linguistic Landscapes Ltd in 2002\, pioneering the commercial application of language analysis to organizational challenges. \nMore info \n‘The Way We Talk Around Here: How your organization’s culture shows up in your language and why it matters’ is shortlisted for the People\, Culture & Management category in this year’s Business Book Awards. Run annually\, the awards celebrate the work of authors who have shared their industry or market knowledge\, experience\, and expertise in published book form. The category People\, Culture & Management is for books focused on improving people skills\, management and working environments. \nAmazon link: https://amzn.eu/d/9xjVnLm  (The Kindle version is currently available at a bargainous 99p/99c in the run up to the Awards announcement on Sept 10th!) \nLinkedIn Live interview coming up on Aug 8th: https://www.linkedin.com/events/meetour2025bbafinalists-gillere7356325971311923201/theater/ \n  \n  \nNo need to pre-register: click here for login

SUMMARY:AI And The Future Of Research - An ICG Panel Debate
DESCRIPTION:This panel debate has been generously sponsored by Quallie AI\, a tool to analyse interviews\, discover themes and share clips from research. \n \n  \nThe ICG is committed to helping its members stay ahead of the curve in relation to AI innovation in resarch; we believe there is great power in sharing our collective experiences and intelligence together.  This ICG event ‘AI and the future of research’ has a dual purpose: \n\nSharing our experiences of using AI tools and visions of the future\, so we learn from each other\nCo-creating what we researchers need to do\, so we help future-proof our roles post AI.\n\nAttendees will leave with a stronger idea of how AI is being used in a range of research methods\, its benefits and shortcomings\, and more confidence in how we can secure our roles in this post-AI era. \nIt will be an interactive event with attendees sharing their thoughts via text chat. \nWe encourage all members to attend\, whatever your thoughts and experiences of AI are. Please come and join in the debate. SUMMARY:BOOK GROUP: Data Storytelling in Marketing
DESCRIPTION:Welcoming the author of this book\, Caroline Florence\, to lead a Book Group discussion about it. \nUse data more effectively to develop compelling evidence-based stories that influence\, persuade and drive strategic decisions. \nMarketers are storytellers\, they write content\, marketing strategies and devise internal communications\, but unless these stories are evidence-based\, they won’t be believable or truly persuasive. \nUnderstanding how to use data to build and tell stories is an increasingly important part of the modern-day\nmarketers’ toolkit. Stories centered on robust evidence and credible data can withstand challenges\, provide meaning\, offer insight and engage audiences. \nThis book is designed to plug the data storytelling skills gap and enable marketing professionals to cut through the data overload\, join the data dots and create engaging narratives and content. \nRegardless of whether you’re a data expert\, data anxious or a data sceptic\, this book will give you the tools to help you to communicate more effectively with your customers and your stakeholders. \nWritten by expert trainer Caroline Florence\, this book outlines how to build robust and compelling data stories. \nDrawing on her client work with companies such as Toyota\, Lactalis\, News UK\, Mars Petcare and AXA\, plus contributions from experts across data\, insights\, marketing and customer experience\, this book provides a practical roadmap to increase your influence with data storytelling. \nAbout the author: \n \nCaroline Florence is a trainer and coach in data analysis\, insight generation and storytelling based near Cambridge\, UK. As founder of Insight Narrator\, she was included in the Twenty Women in Data and Tech in 2023. She was also listed in the ESOMAR Insight250 in 2021 as a global innovator in market research\, data-driven marketing and insights and speaks regularly at conferences around the world on the value of insight. \n  \nhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/carolineflorence/

SUMMARY:ICG Summer Party (with an arty twist) 2024
DESCRIPTION:Generously sponsored by Rigour Research and Qualzy\, with first drinks from Field Notes.  \nProudly bringing you this year’s Summer Party – with an arty twist! \nWhat is this ‘arty twist?’ \nAs something a little different\, we’d like to invite people to embrace their artistic side. \nSo much of our work can feel functional – from the practicalities of arranging fieldwork\, to template-style objectives\, to a general client expectation/industry culture that makes originality and flair in how we communicate findings feel “risky”. \nAnd yet there’s clearly great creativity – and beauty – in how we think and the subjects of the work we do. \nWe’re proposing that at the party we have an area where people can display something relating to their work as a piece of art. This is likely to be space on tables rather than on easels\, but if you’re up for something ambitious then so are we! \nThe idea is that the exhibition is something people can wander round and peruse at their leisure – not something that has to be “manned” all evening whilst everybody else is having fun. \nThe art/object(s) could be ANYTHING (so long as it isn’t breaching any privacy/GDPR rules): \n\nMaybe a notepad containing (non-sensitive) notes or sketches?\nA picture of a sunset taken through the window of a viewing facility?\nOr a redacted first invoice you ever sent?\nPerhaps you want to pop a few watercolours on a canvas to visualise your feelings when clients ghost you?\nYour chipped mug stained with a thousand coffees?\nA framed picture of the product in store that YOU were responsible for bringing to market?\nA data visualisation you’re obsessed with?\nA sketch depicting the most random thing a respondent has said?\nAnd so on and so forth…\n\nIf doing this sounds sooooo YOU\, then we’d like to ask a few things: \n1) That you let us know – so we can keep track of numbers\, not because we want to vet anything!\n2) That each thing you submit has a “title” and 200-word-max description which you can print and bring along to explain your object. \nWe hope this is an opportunity for people to share with each other and find the joy in what we do. \nBook your tickets here\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:ICG Member Book Group: 'The Status Game' by Will Storr
DESCRIPTION:the ICG’s Book Group is designed to give members a flavour of a range of books that other members value and encourage others to read and discuss them. \nEach session will be led by an ICG member who’ll talk briefly about the content of the book they’ve chosen\, why they chose it\, and how they interpret and feel about it.  \nWe’ll then open the session up to others to contribute their own thoughts. You don’t have to have read the book being discussed to attend the session\, but we encourage as many of you as possible to do so. \n\nThis session will be led by Kath Rhodes\, Qual Street\, and will be about ‘The Status Game: On Social Position And How We Use It’ by Will Storr. \nThe book explores the different ways people get/ give status to each other.  For anyone interested in group dynamics and cultural shifts\, this is a worth a read. \n \nNo need to pre-register for these sessions.
